NHS Choices: Live Well - Lose Weight

http://www.nhs.uk/LiveWell/Loseweight/Pages/Loseweighthome.aspx

These pages of the NHS Choices website provide a good source of information on how to manage your weight through diet and physical activity. It provides practical tips on how to lose weight based on sensible, realistic lifestyle changes, and how to maintain this weight loss. There are a couple of sections on how to increase physical activity levels with encouragement that achieving 30 minutes of physical activity is easier than you think. Examples could be:

  • Cycle or walk to work
  • Walk children to and from school and/or walk in your lunch break
  • Be active around the house while doing housework
  • Gardening
  • Play

The website has a couple of physical activity programmes: from couch to 5km in 9 weeks and step by step exercise for beginners.  Both these programmes have been positively reviewed by the general public.  They enjoyed the podcasts that were available to download onto their iPods or MP3 players, including instructions and motivating music.

The website has a handy link to enable you to find services near to you including weight loss and physical activity, using your postcode. This service is only available for England, but Scotland has a similar website for activity: www.activescotland.org.

For an added incentive there is a full section on this website on how to stay motivated with video clips from Olympic athletes past and present.  Having read this website, and the long summer days there is no stopping your patients from achieving their recommended 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week.
