Counterweight Implementation

Counterweight has been funded by the Scottish Government in 13 Health Boards across Scotland.  All Health Boards have chosen different methods of delivery depending on local funding and capacity. Check with your local Counterweight Specialist for information on how Counterweight is funded for your area.

First 3 - 6 months

Planning meetings
  • Set up to explore the feasibility of implementing Counterweight in collaboration with local Health Boards
  • Incorporate Counterweight into local obesity strategy and agree method of local delivery
  • Systems explored at a local level to enable data collection for evaluation and audit.
 

Following 24 months

Practice recruitment
  • GP recruitment occurs through locally agreed protocols involving mailouts, presentations, and direct communication.
Nurse training
  • Nurse training is arranged and agreed locally
  • Counterweight Specialists deliver the training
  • Training and patient education materials are provided
Mentoring in practice
  • Counterweight Specialists facilitate programme implementation and offer intensive support in practice for up to 6 months. This includes competency-based learning
  • Follow-up meetings will be arranged as required and eventually managed by the NHS Counterweight Clinician
