Starting with Counterweight

Introduction
Exploratory meetings between Counterweight and your Health Board are held to prepare your local organisation for Counterweight. These meetings are to discuss the Counterweight Programme and how Counterweight can fit in with your local obesity strategy.

Recruitment meetings with GPs, PNs and local dietitians
These meetings are to present Counterweight and recruit practices.

Follow-up meetings
On-going meetings with your local obesity strategy group and project implementation team may be held to update on progress.

Training of practitioners

Regional PN training – 12 hours
Group training at each practice or at a central Health Board site is arranged. The training is divided into three half-day sessions; two are delivered before practice implementation and one consolidation session is delivered six months later. Practices attend together to make training more time efficient and cost effective; participants will benefit from group interaction. It is recommended that two people from each practice attend for continuity and support within the practice. The first two sessions are provided twice to offer training on different dates and maximise attendance.

In-house whole practice meeting
This meeting is held in each practice after the regional training and is the start of 'in-house' clinical support. The aim is to include GPs, PNs, HCAs, the practice manager and administration staff, and is used to plan the start of the programme. This meeting addresses how practice staff can work together to deliver the Counterweight Programme; it includes discussion about local clinical priorities and provides education.

Clinical support in practice
Clinical support is organised to fit local requirements in liaison with each practice and is available for up to six months following the whole practice meeting.

Long-term sustainability of Counterweight
Training a NHS Counterweight Clinician will help sustain the model in the following years.

Training of new PNs
After the initial regional training is completed the responsibility for further training lies with the local NHS Counterewight Clinician.
