5 benefits you could achieve with weight loss

Everyone has different reasons for wanting to lose weight that are personal to them. Perhaps you’re concerned about your health, maybe you’re hoping to prevent or reverse type 2 diabetes, or maybe you want to start wearing the clothes that are packed away for “when you lose weight”.

It’s always a good idea to spend some time unpacking exactly why it is that you want to lose weight to light that fire of motivation! Check out our list and see if any of these resonate with you.

1. BETTER HEALTH

Let’s get the obvious out of the way, since these are the benefits most of us are aware of. Better cardiovascular health, less chance of developing type 2 diabetes, possible remission from type 2 diabetes, less chance of stroke or heart disease, less risk of high blood pressure, some types of cancer, osteoarthritis and back pain. Simply put, when you lose weight, you may improve your health and that includes improving your life expectancy and quality of life – sometimes quite drastically.

2. MORE ENERGY

Imagine feeling energised and full-of-beans every day! Sometimes when you lose weight,  you have more energy to go about your daily lives and do the things you love. Simple things like walking upstairs becomes easier, or you are more able to do things with family or friends. Doing the things you love is not only good for your physical health, but great for mental health too.

3. BETTER SLEEP

Sleep apnoea and snoring can improve radically with a weight loss of as little as 5%. This can then lead to better sleep and better sleep adds to the higher energy levels, better moods and better cognitive abilities – everything is related when it comes to the body!

4. LESS MEDICATIONS

For some people, one of the greatest benefits of weight loss is the reduced need for certain medication. In some instances, type 2 diabetes goes into remission, and/or cholesterol and blood pressure improve, and the medications can be reduced or stopped altogether. Is this something that appeals to you?

5. IMPROVED CONFIDENCE

Whether it’s fitting into your old clothes or feeling more positive about your body, most people find that they feel much more confident after losing weight!  Some people also notice a change in their ‘self-talk’ after losing weight, which too can build self-esteem. What would you do if you had more confidence?

Do any of the above benefits resonate with you?
